Moisture Drainage and Ventilation

Keene Building Products™ manufactures 3-dimensional building envelope products for moisture control. These products work in wall, masonry, foundation, and plaza applications, to increase moisture drainage and ventilation. This polymer filament mat is placed between different materials to space components and create drainage, ventilation, and isolation in many aspects of a wall, roof or floor.

The Keene Driwall™ building envelope products include full-wall rainscreen applications, mortar collection devices for half, one and two-inch masonry cavity walls, weep vents and weep screeds, and drainage and ventilation products for several different types of roofing applications.

Construction techniques have changed by tightening structures to prevent thermal leakage. This change in the construction process has led to less air infiltration, which has contributed to moisture problems in cavity spaces.

With the installation of a rainscreen system, the drainage and ventilation will be provided for exterior applications ranging from masonry, stone, to cement boards. By using Keene’s Driwall™ products, moisture, ventilation, and other issues such as efflorescence and mortar bridging, will no longer be problems in your project, regardless of whether it is a new construction or retrofit. Keene’s building envelope products will make sure your construction project has a long and moisture-free life.

The Brick Institute Requires a Cavity for a Reason

Certain places can’t have a wet spot.

The Brick Institute has a lot more experience with masonry structures then just about anyone. That’s why for years, the institute has specified a cavity to allow for the drainage of the incidental moisture that passes through masonry. Brick is porous and the mortar that holds the brick together is just as porous (if not more) than the brick. Stone, cultured stone and block have the same characteristic – THEY ALL LET MOISTURE PASS THROUGH. Having a clear path for moisture to drain is the answer. Cavities are specified by the Brick Institute to be two inches (5 cm) in thickness. Having a clear path with no mortar dams and no bridging of mortar is the owner’s assurance of NO problems later in the life of the building. Remember, masonry buildings are meant to last, and brick and stone are selected for their longevity. Providing a long-term solution to moisture problems is what Driwall™ Rainscreen and Driwall™ Mortar Deflection are designed to accomplish.
