The more complicated, the more room for error. In the early 20th century, we built walls simply – no insulation in the cavity, paper on the outside of the building for moisture runoff, and nominal lumber for sheathing. Energy efficiency made design more complicated, and moisture problems followed. We created tighter walls and insulation, and energy savings increased. So did the moisture problems. Our open cavities and the ease that air passed through our walls and roofs helped dry out incidental moisture.
KEENE provides products that are easy to install. We designed Rainscreen products that are fastened to building sheathing with hammer tacks, and mortar collection devices that fit loosely in the cavity. Our below-grade drainage is so lightweight, that one person can carry two rolls. Our new CAV-AIR-ATOR full-wall Rainscreen for commercial masonry has the mason’s fingers in mind. It has extra space so knuckles aren’t mauled during brick installation, and easily locks together with angled bottoms and tops. We aren’t designing esoteric products that complicate construction; KEENE designs for performance enhancement with the most simple, easy solution possible.
In foundations, we’ve developed a drainable protection board. Now the expensive membrane can be spared during backfill with a material that drains well. Driwall™ PCD offers many simple solutions for waterproofing contractors.
