Course Number: HW202.1 | Credit Type: 1 LU/HSW

The construction industry has seen a substantial increase in moisture-related issues in exterior walls. This presentation will discuss how a rainscreen wall system prevents moisture build-up within walls by providing a means for drainage and ventilation. The presentation provides an overview of rainscreen principles and explains how to incorporate a rainscreen system in a variety of applications including stucco, manufactured stone, siding, and masonry cavity walls. This course will explore the critical role of rainscreen systems and proper ventilation in building construction. These elements not only protect against water damage but also contribute to a healthier, more energy-efficient living environment. Learn how integrating these features can extend the lifespan of your walls, improve indoor air quality, and ultimately save you money in the long run.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the way that various wall systems are being detailed and identify potential flaws that can lead to moisture failures.
  • Review the benefits and principles behind having an airspace within the wall system.
  • Review what a rainscreen is and why it’s important.
  • Establish the best practices for designing and constructing a well-drained and ventilated rainscreen wall system.

There are many ways of solving the sound dilemma in multi-family. This presentation will help learn and understand how noise is measured, types of noise, and how to build and design with noise control on your mind. You will learn the different elements involved in an entangled net sound system and how any multi-family construction can benefit from it.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review how noise results are measured and types of noise in building design.
  • Discuss and identify the most common acoustical systems for quiet living in multi-family and understanding that one component is not the solution in controlling noise.
  • Compare the performance of various building materials needed to reach certain classification standards, as well as establish the benefits of living in noise-free environments.
  • Establish the best practices for healthy living with the use of an entangled net sound system.

Course Number: NCCLTFCS | Credit Type: 1 LU/HSW

This course examines acoustic challenges in CLT floor/ceiling systems, with emphasis on impact noise in multifamily and mixed-use buildings. Participants will review core sound-control principles, including STC, IIC, mass law, damping, decoupling, and flanking paths, with specific application to tall wood and CLT construction. Attendees will review tested assembly strategies, and practical design considerations to balance performance, constructability, weight, and cost while improving occupant comfort and reducing post-occupancy complaints and liability.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the inherent acoustical limitations of cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor/ceiling systems, including challenges related to airborne and impact sound transmission.
  • Identify design strategies used to improve STC and IIC performance in CLT assemblies, including the roles of mass, damping, decoupling, and sound isolation.
  • Evaluate above-floor and below-floor acoustic treatment options for CLT systems based on performance, constructability, and project-specific design considerations.
  • Compare the economic impacts of various acoustic upgrade strategies in CLT floor/ceiling systems, including cost, assembly complexity, and long-term performance value.

Course Number: MNWS2024 | Credit Type: 1 LU/HSW

This course provides specifiers of masonry veneer walls the description of a complete high performance wall system that meets the wall systems requirements ASTM E2357 (Air Leakage), ASTM E331 (Water Penetration), and NFPA 285 (Fire Propagation). The wall components associated with moisture management and interactions with other system components are highlighted. Additionally, an effective and efficient means to specify such walls is presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the characteristics of drainage and ventilation in a high-performance masonry cavity wall system.
  • Explain and avoid poor masonry cavity wall envelope design and detailing.
  • Define and specify appropriate materials for drainage and ventilation in a high-performance masonry cavity wall system.
  • Describe effective means to insure specifying a high-performance wall system.

Course Number: MNBE2024 | Credit Type: 1 LU/HSW

This course examines sustainable masonry cavity wall design based on AIA principles. Participants will learn to identify common design and construction problems, select appropriate materials, and specify durable wall assemblies that support long-term performance and sustainability.

Learning Objectives:

  • State the LEED guidelines that help in the design of sustainable building envelopes.
  • Define the basics of the “cradle-to-cradle” philosophy in order to specify processes and materials that support this design approach.
  • Describe appropriate materials/construction techniques necessary to design sustainable masonry envelopes.
  • Explain and avoid poor design and detailing that can lead to masonry envelope failure.

Course Number: MNAMV2024 | Credit Type: 1 LU|HSW

This course examines best practices for adhered masonry veneer walls, emphasizing proper drainage and ventilation. Participants will compare adhered veneer and masonry cavity wall systems, identify common design and installation errors, and learn how to select materials and techniques that support durable, energy-efficient, water resistant construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Overview of the conditions of leakage, the forces behind leakage, and how these forces cause water penetration to a building’s structure.
  • Understand and compare the three typical systems utilized in balcony waterproofing: (1) Sheet-Applied Systems, (2) Fluid-Applied Systems, and (3) Cementitious Systems.
  • Highlight the most overlooked component when assembling these balcony waterproofing systems, being the inclusion of a drainage layer, and highlight the two common types of drainage layers that can be utilized, being Extruded or Thermoformed Prefabricated Composite Drains.
  • Teach the audience the difference between an Extruded and Thermoformed Prefabricated Composite Drain and explain the critical nature of utilizing either of the two in balcony waterproofing systems, stressing their ease of inclusion in traditional sheet systems and how they drastically help to extend the life of the balcony and ensure proper performance over time for the waterproofing system as a whole.
